Ramit Elon Receives her Get

Ramit, a mother of three, a poet and an artist, received a get today in the Haifa Rabbinical Court.  This came after a bitter five year struggle in which Ramit insisted she deserved her freedom without having to make concessions or compromises.
Congratulations! We hope and pray for a happy and successful future for Ramit.

A bill submitted by Mavoi Satum together with MK Otniel Shneller from Kadima has been approved by a ministerial committee and has passed its primary reading in the Knesset.
The bill compels the rabbinical courts to discuss the implementation of sanctions on a recalcitrant husband as soon as a "chiyuv get" (order from the "bet din" for a man to give his wife a "get") is passed down by the "bet din".
The purpose of the law is to use the sanctions as a tool to procure the "get".
We hope that this bill will promote the elements of equality and justice and will prevent the drawn out and painful suffering endured by many women in the divorce process.
We will continue to work on improving the final version of this law by requesting that the "bet din" apply automatic sanctions against the husband as soon as a "chiyuv get" order is given; without requiring further discussion on the subject.

Director for the rabbinic courts

The Knesset has started its recess with certain controversial issues such as the conversion law, left to be discussed at its next session. Mavoi Satum in conjunction with Naamat has tabled a bill in the Knesset allowing for the appointment of a woman to the position of director general of the rabbinic courts. Up till now the law has blocked the candidacy of talented and capable women who have been dealing for years with the issues of personal status in general and in the functioning of the courts in particular.

The bill was submitted by MK’s Orit Zoaretz and Marina Solodkin. The following MK’s have given us their support: David Rotem, Eitan Cabel, Shelly Yechimovitz, Nachman Shai, Dov Hanin, and Haim Oron.

In addition Mavoi Satum approached the government’s legal counsel to issue a ruling on this subject. The letter states as follows:-

”the aim of this application is to put a stop to the illegal practice of preferring men for judicial and administrative positions within the rabbinic court system, and to enable the appointment of women to managerial positions within the rabbinic courts".

Naamat, Wizo, and the Center for Women’s Justice are co signatories to the application.

The application was transferred to the attention of Adv. Malchiel Balas, of the legal advisors' office
.

Tzohar to set up private rabbinic courts
[NRG, 19/7/2010]

Tzohar rabbis recently announced that they are willing to set up   private rabbinic courts that will deal with personal  status issues.
There are other religious Zionist organizations who are also willing to set up independent frameworks to act as  viable alternatives to the present Israeli rabbinate.

We welcome this bold step and see this  move as a way to bring social change to our society after many years of hard work in the public sphere and in our contact with rabbis, dayanim and community leaders . We will be active in helping set up these rabbinic courts and be involved in their functioning until the issue of sarvanut is finally solved. Read more
